    Heretics and...

Heretics and Hellraisers. Women contributors to The Masses, 1911-1917

Hardcover with dustjacket, in excellent condition. With pictures.

The Masses was the most dynamic and influential left-wing magazine of the early twentieth century, a touchstone for understanding radical thought and social movements in the United States during that era. As a magazine that supported feminist issues, it played a crucial role in shaping public discourse about women's concerns. Women editors, fiction writers, poets, and activists like Mary Heaton Vorse, Inez Irwin, Jean Starr Untermeyer, Amy Lowell, and Mabel Dodge Luhan contributed as significantly to the magazine as better-known male figures. In this major revisionist work, Margaret C. Jones calls for reexamination of the relevance of Masses feminism to that of the 1990s. She explores women contributors` perspectives on crucial issues: patriarchy, birth control, the labor movement, woman suffrage, pacifism, and ethnicity. Jones also follows the subsequent careers of several prominent contributors - Mary Heaton Vorse, Dorothy Day, Louise Bryant, Adriana Spadoni, Elsie Clews Parsons, Inez Haynes Gillmore, and Helen Hull - to understand later developments in the radical and feminist movements and their relevance to women`s issues in the 1990s. The book includes numerous examples of the writings and visual art of Masses women and a series of biographical /bibliographical sketches designed to aid other researchers. This book will be important reading for the fields of American studies, women's studies, and literary and political biography.

    Between Field and...

    Between Field and Cooking Pot

    Paperback in goede staat. Engelstalig.

From reviews of the first edition:"The book has a clear and readable style, moving easily between vignettes of marketwomen's lives, descriptions of the markets themselves, and surveys of the theoretical literature. Babb's long, close involvement with the Huaraz markets is apparent. As someone who has spent a lot of time in Andean markets, I found the book pleasurable to read, because it recreated the experience of the marketplace so well."--American Ethnologist"Between Field and Cooking Pot offers details of the daily lives of marketwomen in the central Andean departmental capital of Huaraz. . . . A welcome addition to studies of women and international development, this book contains a wealth of firsthand material, collected through informal participant-observation as well as formal interviews and analysis of statistical data. . . . The book encourages us to imagine how the dynamic culture of marketwomen might intersect with the construction, representation, and effects of class and gender."--American Anthropologist"The book has a clear and readable style, moving easily between vignettes of marketwomen's lives, descriptions of the markets themselves, and surveys of the theoretical literature. Babb's long, close involvement with the Huaraz markets is apparent. As someone who has spent a lot of time in Andean markets, I found the book pleasurable to read, because it recreated the experience of the marketplace so well."--American EthnologistThis revised edition of Between Field and Cooking Pot offers an updated appraisal of what neoliberal politics and economics mean in the lives of marketwomen in the nineties, based on new fieldwork conducted in 1997. Babb also reflects on how recent currents in feminist and anthropological studies have caused her to rethink some aspects of Andean marketers in Peruvian culture and society.
